This year the beaches 3¾ mile run was South Devon AC's 4th Grand Prix event. The in-house race went off at 7pm, most runners had reached the Inn on the Quay before Dave Hampton started one minute behind them (due to finishing work late). By the time the other runners had got halfway up cliff walk Dave had powered his way past half of the field. The race continued to Paignton harbour along Paignton beach to Preston and by the halfway mark Dave was in the lead where he stayed, winning in a new PB time of 20mins 30 seconds (previous best 21.42). His training partner, Liam  Lindon, followed him home with a brilliant effort in 22.47, 3rd home was the ever youthful Marc Walpot in 24.09 PB, 4th was Kevin Ashworth 24.33 PB, 5th was Marc Jones 25.12, 6th Vince Langdon 25.49 PB, 7th Steve Hookins 27.51 with a sprint finish having completed a 50 mile race last weekend with just an 18 miler to complete this weekend!

The ladies race was won quite comfortably by Karen Bumby in 28.36, 2nd Sue Hayes 30.14 PB; Sue was out sprinted by her son Francis in the last 200 yards.

On Tuesday 9th June SDAC had its 'Beaches Run' for the 2nd year - also a Grand Prix event. The race started at South Sands, Goodrington and went to the end of Preston Beach and back on the same course - a distance of 3 3/4 miles. Although very windy conditions, this did not stop 6 of the 10 who ran last year getting PB's. There were 22 runners in total this year.

Dave Hampton flew from the start; his nearest opposition being fromNaomi Flanagan and Michelle Cowley. Dave drew clear to win in a PB time of 21:42, followed by Naomi in 23:15 PB and Michelle in 23:55 PB.

Great running by all that took part.

On Tuesday 5th August SDAC held their first running of the in-house Grand Prix BEACHES RUN. Starting at South Sands, Goodrington and running mainly on sandy beaches to Hollicombe and back - just under 4 miles in total. The rainy conditions ensured that there were few people on the beaches and fewer sandcastles to avoid. There was a good turnout of runners from SDAC. Dave Hampton shot into an early lead and stormed up Cliff Walk before tackling Paignton and Preston beaches. At the half-way stage he was 75 yards ahead of Jerry Hocking but by the finish he had powered to a 1 minute 4 second lead. Colin Peters and Rob Leeke had a battle for 3rd place with Colin just dipping on the line to secure 3rd position. The ladies race was a close run affair with Naomi 200 yards in front at the half-way stage, but a storming finish by Michelle enabled her to reduce the gap to just 5 seconds.
