For their first marathon most people pick a flatter course, but South Devon AC member Liam Lindon decided on the South Devon marathon at Beesands in tribute to a family member. The course is picturesque and punishing with a rating of severe! With its blend of jagged rocks interspersed with idyllic sandy coves this area of coastline is beautiful and hugely inspiring. A break from the rain and spring was definitely in the air and in the step of South Devon AC runners as members new and old made the most of local races and parkruns. Despite the picture two South Devon AC runners weren’t feeling goofy at all as they took on the Walt Disney World marathon in Orlando Florida. Despite hot, humid conditions Dani and Antony Waters both did fantastically running their first marathon - well done both! It was a very successful weekend at Bournemouth Marathon Festival for South Devon AC runners both seniors and juniors with nearly everyone recording PB’s. For the marathon it was a lovely sunny day and despite the headwind along some of the seafront sections Alex Magee was first back for the club in a brilliant 3:13:04. Another busy weekend of racing for South Devon AC runners with local races and overseas adventures. Kevin and Laura Ashworth teamed up to take on the Budapest half marathon which runs along the river Danube taking in the city sites. Finishing in 01:36:26 they were 41st out of 943 teams and 15th in their age category. Friday evening was the Torbay Road Relays at the Velopark and hosted by Torbay Athletic Club. South Devon AC fielded six teams on a lovely evening and a great time was had by all with some great running and epic sprint finishes! Saturday was South Devon AC’s turn to host a race with the challenging Coleton Footacher. There are plenty of hills but there was great scenery and cheery marshalls to distract from the pain! Sometimes Bank Holiday weekends are all about racing and sometimes they’re not! With Torbay Velopark parkrun cancelled and other races thin on the ground a few South Devon AC runners sampled other local parkruns and our resident parkrun tourist Dave Cubberly ran the Chester parkrun. It was a busy weekend of running for South Devon AC athletes starting with the Run Exe relays on Friday evening. South Devon fielded six teams for the relays with the best results for the senior ladies and male vet 50 teams who both placed 5th in their category. Saturday was the next instalment in South Devon AC’s Grand Prix at Ivybridge 10K, it’s a well organised fast course and nineteen South Devon runners enjoyed the lovely sunny evening. Despite running Torbay parkrun earlier Alex Magee was first back for the club in a great time of 38:35. South Devon AC runners made full use of the Bank Holiday weekend enjoying the best of the Devon countryside being parkrun tourists and some travelling further afield. Sunday was London Marathon day for two South Devon AC runners and everyone else spent the morning tracking them online! Anita Carpenter won the club place, really dedicated herself to training and finished in a fantastic 4:48:19. Colin Peters also ran and achieved a “Good for age” time with a superb 3:09:47. Spring Marathon season is well under way with South Devon AC runners competing at Brighton and Paris marathons. Alex Magee and Fiona Stephens braved the cold and windy conditions at Brighton with Steph Bartlett and Chris Shuttleworth aka Balloon Man travelling to Paris for the marathon there. Spring is in the air and summer on the way as the first events in the Run Exe 5K series and the Devon Open took place this week. Hugh Slater and John Drennan competed in the Run Exe 5K and followed up with Torbay and Haldon parkruns respectively at the weekend. Despite the wet and windy weather conditions SDAC runners took on a few races this weekend. Race the Light Four club members took on the Race the Light which is a shadowy 8.5 mile escapade, meandering through Flete Estates’ secret tracks and trails.
