Storm Ciara sadly caused the postponement of Ocean Brave 10K on Sunday so it was just a parkrun weekend. For their first marathon most people pick a flatter course, but South Devon AC member Liam Lindon decided on the South Devon marathon at Beesands in tribute to a family member. The course is picturesque and punishing with a rating of severe! With its blend of jagged rocks interspersed with idyllic sandy coves this area of coastline is beautiful and hugely inspiring. South Devon AC had their first Club 3k race on Tuesday evening which was smoothly run by the new team headed up by Colin Peters. A break from the rain and spring was definitely in the air and in the step of South Devon AC runners as members new and old made the most of local races and parkruns. Despite the picture two South Devon AC runners weren’t feeling goofy at all as they took on the Walt Disney World marathon in Orlando Florida. Despite hot, humid conditions Dani and Antony Waters both did fantastically running their first marathon - well done both! South Devon AC were represented at the EA Club and County Cross Country Championships at Yeovil on Sunday by a squad of five from the juniors. Some great racing from all with tough competition, best placing was Theo Glew who took 4th place in the U11 boys category. A two week round up of South Devon AC running over the festive season! Thursday before Christmas was the SDAC annual Jingle Jog to see the festive lights of Paignton and wave at the Train of Lights. The final race in South Devon AC Grand Prix was the Haldon Jingle Bell 10K – a two lap course through Haldon forest with just a few hills! Although cold and windy the rain held off and there was some great running and results from SDAC runners. South Devon AC seniors and juniors were representing the club on Sunday at the Devon County Cross Country. The “senior” squad was Vince Langdon, Brian Marjoram and Roger Webb and the juniors were Lauren Carr, Hannah Carr, Theo Glew, Harry Kendall, Oscar Mytton and Evie Rowe. It was the end of an era on Thursday for South Devon AC with Alan Sloman and his team running their last winter 3K before handing over to a new team. Alan has been running the 3K winter series of five races for thirteen years – a fantastic contribution to the club. Well done to the team of eleven athletes from South Devon AC Juniors who competed in the Devon County Sportshall League Championship at Dawlish Leisure Centre at the weekend. Apart from parkrun it was only the Juniors racing at the weekend by competing in the Westward League Cross Country. A wet and wild week of running for South Devon AC! Several spooky characters were spotted on the Thursday club run and a couple of skeletons ( Dave Cubberley and Liz Lee ) were seen at the Jolly running Halloween race in Cockington. South Devon AC’s Grand Prix series continued on Sunday with the Tavy 7 which was also hosting the Ross Shield. It’s lovely scenic undulating route over Dartmoor and SDAC fielded a squad of twenty-three runners. It was a quiet weekend for most South Devon AC runners with only a few traveling to races. Dave Cubberley spent the weekend in the woods starting with Haldon Forest parkrun and then running the Dark Woods 10K. Claire Cornish and Rod Keen enjoyed a well-earned beer and pasty after running the Eden Project half marathon in rather wet and muddy conditions. It was a very successful weekend at Bournemouth Marathon Festival for South Devon AC runners both seniors and juniors with nearly everyone recording PB’s. For the marathon it was a lovely sunny day and despite the headwind along some of the seafront sections Alex Magee was first back for the club in a brilliant 3:13:04. On Tuesday South Devon AC held the next instalment of the Clubs 3K series which counts as the Club Championship. A gentle breeze and light drizzle seemed to be good conditions for running as five PB’s were recorded out of the 27 runners, thanks to Alan and his team for another smoothly run race. Sunday was the next race in South Devon AC’s Grand Prix series at the Killerton 10K. Torrential rain just before the race didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm and fortunately the rain stopped and held off long enough for everyone to get around the course. Another good week of racing for South Devon AC with races ranging from one mile to ultramarathons. On Thursday it was the annual Club mile race round Paignton green, it was an ideal night for running with a keen wind down the back straight and a tailwind on the home straight.
