Dear Parents and Athletes.
Welcome back to training, I hope you all had a good break & are ready to get stuck back into this term’s training – the schedule of training for the autumn term is now available on the website.
Also welcome to any new parents and athletes – I have attached the Membership form / Welcome letter for the 2018/19 year which also provides useful information on membership and related matters. You get the first couple of sessions as a taster with no commitment but after that I need to take membership forms & payment.
If you joined late last term and are returning but not yet paid & completed the form, please do so when you return.
As usual at the start of a new term I remind parents that the £10 term fees are also due.
I also enclose the Code of Conduct policy for athletes which is there to ensure that all athletes and coaches can enjoy & get the most out of the sessions safely & respectfully.
For those new to the Club, the website provides details of days / times / location etc, but briefly we still train outside on the Churston Grammar School playing fields for the 4 weeks of September, from 6pm to 7.45pm (final week in Sept will finish 7.30pm). 1st session back is Monday 3rd Sept. From October (& through to March), we train in the school sports hall, but break into two age groups – actually it’s by school year. The 6-7pm group is for those in school years 3, 4 & 5 – categorized as Under 10s & Under 11s by England Athletics (minimum age for joining is 8). The 7-8pm group is therefore school years 6 and above. For note, I may request some year 6’s to ……..
We also run a junior Grand Prix competition which is an in-house competition run every year from January 1st & consists of 10 events – approx one per month. A cup at the end of the year is presented at the clubs annual awards night for the winner in each age group. Please see relevant links on the Juniors Website for the competitions completed so far & points - 7 events have now been completed (please be aware that 6 events have to be completed for you to win the award).
The next Grand Prix is the X-Country run in the grounds of Churston school. Approx distances are –
Under 10’s 1 mile
Under 11’s 1.6 miles
Under 13/15’s 1.8 miles
Additionally, Juniors 2K Park Run is due to start in the next couple of months on Sunday mornings 9am at the Torbay Velotrack. This is not run by any athletics clubs but by volunteers & is now a worldwide event. The Torbay Velopark Run website is here -
Also, there is Westward X-Country League, which begins in October – 6 events in total with 3 in Devon, at Stover, Exeter & Plymouth (the other 3 in Cornwall). The website with all the details is here -
The dates for the events are -
Sunday 7th October - Plymouth
Sunday 11th November - Newquay
Sunday 2nd December - Exeter
Sunday 13th January – Westward Ho!
Sunday 9th February – Stover
Sunday 3rd March – Redruth
Speak to me on a Monday evening if you want more info.
I think that’s enough for now – but if anyone is interested in volunteering to assist coaches on a Monday night, even just occasionally, please let me know.
