Sunday was a great day of athletics for South Devon Athletic Club and everyone associated with the club are tremendously proud of all the athletes who were competed at the Devon County Championships, Exeter Arena.
Special thanks and mention to Kitty and Maisey on their first track event, and what an event to choose! They both turned in great performances, gave 100% and quickly settled into the competition. It can feel a bit daunting but both rose to the occasion and absolutely nailed it.
Kitty had a great crouched start which got her off to a flyer in the U13G 100m heat and finished 4th and despite a knee injury, ran a great race
Maisey ran a strong 100m heat and reached the finals. Here, Maisie held her own, never slowed up and finished 5th overall, awesome running from both girls.
Maisie also competed in the U13G long jump, and with each jump bettered the last, at jump 6 she went into the lead, resulting in Maisie winning the competition for her age and becoming County Champion!
Lizzie had a mix of track and field and ran the U15G 800m race in a competitive field, finishing 7th. Next up was the long jump and after 6 jumps finished 5th. Lizzie then went over with the South Devon ladies to the shot put and scored a 6th place in U15G event.
Millie, our youngest athlete chose the 1500m, a hard and leg zapping race, as each lap is counted down. Millie finished 6th in U13G race but won the crowd over with a spirited 1500m run, sprinting the home straight to the applause of the stand. In the long jump, Millie also competed well and finished in 13th place.
Oscar in the U13B 100m took a flying start against a hefty 4.1 headwind, managing to retain the lead until the tape and came home first for gold alongside a PB and SB. With just enough time to catch his breath he then went into the 200m final and finished second with another SB and another PB. Switching to the field, Oscar took 1st place in the shot put, completing a personal hat-trick of SBs & PBs whilst collecting his second gold medal of the day.
Rowan opened his account in the U13B High jump with a gold medal with some great jumping. Competing in the 800m race for his second event, a sprint finish nailed the bronze spot. Rowan then went on to collect another bronze medal in the 200m race.
First up for Hayden was the high jump and he started the day well with a great silver medal. In the 100m U13B Hayden despite the 4.9 headwind, had a cracking run and secured bronze, he then competed in the long jump and finished 4th.
Ava led the trio of SDAC throwers in the shot put and finished 5th. Ava then took to the track and in windy conditions finished 6th in the U17G 100m race. Ava also ran a strong 200m race again into a headwind to finish 6th.
Grace started on the track and ran in the U17G 200m race finishing 8th before turning to the field to compete in the long jump where she finished 4th with a PB and SB. Grace also finished in 7th place in the shot put.
Hannah, had her focus on the high jump pre-event and bagged a bronze, ran a PB, which she had also targeted in the 300m, finishing 5th. Finally in a highly contested shot put, finished 6th.
Lauren had a solid run in the U17G 100m final against a 3.1 headwind and secured a great silver, with a PB and SB. Lauren was fast from the gun in the 80m hurdles, attacking from the very first hurdle to set up the win, and taking a SB and PB too. In the 200m Lauren finished 4th.
