South Devon Athletic Club runners welcomed in a trio of events this week covering fell, coastal and road terrains.

On a very hot summer evening, seven South Devon Athletic Club runners competed in the Dartmoor Summer Solstice race set in the magnificent Merrivale valley.

The event takes in just under 6 miles of hills with stunning views of Dartmoor, starting with an immediate climb up Staple Tor then on to Roos Tor and White Tor with a final climb back up Staple Tor on the return loop followed by a steep and at that point extremely welcome downhill finish.

In 25th place overall, Stuart Batten finished in 45:06 followed by Vince Langdon (64th in 55:32),  Jeremy Goddard (68th in 56:35), George Holman (71st in 57:47), James Nash (94th in 1:12:09), Mark Holman (95th in 1:12:29) and Michelle Coles (96th in 1:13:43)

Nine members of South Devon Athletic Club swapped their regular Thursday night training runs for the tricky Dawlish Coastal Dash.

Among them was Maria Weymouth, tackling her first-ever race.

Organised by Dawlish Coasters, the race starts and finishes at Dawlish Warren, taking in just under four miles of soft sand, obstacles, sea wall and railway bridges.

The weather proved to be kind, with the forecast thunderstorms staying away and only a few light showers to trouble the racers.

SDAC chairman Colin Peters was the first of the club’s runners home, in 32nd place in a field of 141, clocking a time of 26m 55s. He was followed by Steve Wright (63rd in 31:26), Neil Jordain (72nd in 32:28) and Guy Henderson (74th in 32:58).
