South Devon 3k Relays - 19th August 2022

Friday 19th August provided the bay with another fine summers evening and saw the launch of the inaugural South Devon Athletic Club 3K Relays.

A magnificent 57 teams competed in the event with participants from across the whole of the South West with teams coming from as far away as Newquay.

Teams of four raced approx. 3 KM each on an out and back lap of the Torbay Velopark circuit with two junior teams also competing admirably alongside the adult teams.

The City of Plymouth Junior Team finished in an excellent time of 44 minutes and 45 seconds with South Devon AC juniors crossing in 55m 22s, the parents and the teams should be extremely proud of how they ran and conducted themselves alongside the seniors teams

Torbay Tri submitted 10 teams for the event and provided the winners of the Senior Male team prize (Jason Hurford, Ben Gerrish, Dave Brown. Lewis Chorleton), coming home in a very impressive time of 39m and 11s, with Jason and Ben both recording the fastest individual times at 09m 20s.

Newquay Road Runners made sure the journey to Torbay was a successful one as they won both the Senior Female prize (Katie Knowles, Eleanor Dixon, Melissa King, Nicola Squires) in 42m and 2s with Katie starring with a lap time of 9m 55s, and the Mixed Team prize (Alison Roose, Colette Clements, Darren Roose, John Scott) in 45m and 51s

The Male V40 team winners were Chucklevision (Barry, Paul, Charlie & Dominic Chuckle!) in 39m 54s. with South West Road Runners (Pauline Davis, Louise Reynolds, Suzie Tosh, Tracy Connor) claiming the Female V40 prize in 50m 50s.

The V50 & 60 team winners were all claimed by teams from the Teignbridge Trotters, with the Female V50 (Jackie Woon,  Kim Knight, Deb Hart, Mandy Wheeler) finishing in 53m 23s, Males V50 (Julian Scanes, Roger Hayes, Jason Trevenen, Duncan Knight) in 45m and 1s and Males V60 (James Saunders, Derek Skinner, Neil Rutley, Alex Boone) in 47m 43s.

It was a great evening with wall to wall smiles across everyone’s faces. What was most impressive watching from a far, was the running community ethos and spirit, with (loud) words of encouragement, enthusiasm and support from everyone for all the teams and runners on each leg of the race.

A huge well done to the race director, Antony Waters and to everyone else at South Devon AC who either helped organising or hosting the event. The evening was superbly compered by Guy Henderson despite having to vehemently deny any suggestion of sponsorship from the ice cream van. Finally, kudos to Stuart Batten who with some trusted allies managed to get the full race results issued less than an hour after the final runner had crossed the line. See you all next year
